Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of India. He was born at Allahabad on Nov. 14th, 1889. his father Moti Lal Nehru was a great barrister. Jawahar Lal Nehru was the only son of his parents. He was educated in England. He passed Law and became a barrister in India.

Mahatma Gandhi was fighting for India's freedom. Jawahar Lal Nehru came in contact with him and became his disciple. He joined the freedom movement and became a great leader. In 1929 he was elected president of the congress. He sacrificed everything for the sake of the country.

He was fond of children. They called him 'Chacha Nehru'. That is why his birthday is celebrated as 'Children's Day'.

As the Prime Minister he worked for the progress of the Country. He made five year plans. He was apostle of peace.

He died on 27th May, 1984. India lost a great son and leader in him. He is not among us yet his ideals will remain with us for ever.
